Position Title: Senior Retirement Counselor

Position Overview:
Our client is seeking a Senior Retirement Counselor to serve as the primary relationship manager for their largest and most complex retirement plan sponsor clients. In this role, the Senior Retirement Counselor owns the client relationship from onboarding through long-term servicing and is responsible for delivering fiduciary investment services, governance consulting, and participant support.
This position focuses on managing retirement plans with larger asset sizes, typically $7M+ and often $20M+ in assets under management. The Senior Retirement Counselor works closely with plan sponsors, recordkeepers, and TPAs to support plan governance, oversee vendor relationships, and guide clients through complex retirement plan decisions. This role also provides mentorship to junior team members and serves as a subject matter expert for internal projects and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for larger and more complex retirement plan sponsor clients.
- Manage retirement plans with assets typically exceeding $7M and often $20M or more.
- Maintain strong relationships with plan sponsor leadership teams and investment committees.
- Lead investment review meetings and retirement plan committee meetings with plan sponsors.
- Provide retirement plan consulting related to plan design, governance, and fiduciary responsibilities.
- Assist plan sponsors in identifying investment goals and support development and maintenance of Investment Policy Statements.
- Review existing plan design and recommend improvements when appropriate.
- Provide recommendations regarding recordkeeper and TPA selection and vendor management.
- Oversee retirement plan amendments, recordkeeper installations, asset transfers, and investment lineup updates.
- Design and implement participant education and enrollment campaigns.
- Travel approximately 40% of the time to meet with clients and conduct participant education sessions and one-on-one meetings.
- Support plan sponsors with annual retirement plan administrative requirements and governance responsibilities.
- Communicate regularly with clients regarding investment strategy updates, market outlook, and investment lineup changes.
- Provide fee benchmarking and other analysis to support fiduciary decision-making.
- Coordinate with internal teams, recordkeepers, and TPAs to ensure retirement plans are serviced properly.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on projects and provide guidance on initiatives affecting the Retirement Counselor team.
- Mentor Associate and Core Retirement Counselors within the organization.
- Maintain a strong focus on client satisfaction and long-term retention.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Significant experience in financial services with a focus on retirement plans and 401(k) plan design.
- Strong relationship management experience with full ownership of client relationships.
- Experience leading investment committee meetings and presenting to plan sponsor leadership teams.
- Strong knowledge of retirement plan design, ERISA regulations, and capital markets.
- Experience working with larger retirement plans and complex client structures preferred.
- Series 65 license preferred or ability to obtain upon starting the role.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present complex financial concepts clearly.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
